The World of Tania

Druid

Druids are both alike and unlike sages and sorcerers.  Where the other classes employ magical energy, druids embody it.  While appearing quite human, they are something a little bit more.  As a race they possess a unique acuity to nature.  It is as if they are born directly from the earth.  This ability is inborn and is found in all members of the druid race.

Similar to sorcerers, druids are born with a certain amount of power.  And like sorcerers, and sages, this potential can be increased with training.  Unlike others, though, druids are limited to the natural sphere.  They cannot perform or affect anything unnatural.  They can make a plant grow, but not walk.  And within this sphere, there is a range of power among druids.  Where a lesser member of the race can predict a storm, a more powerful one can cause it.  Despite the opportunity for advancement, most druids are content with the inborn ability.

Teaching among druids is similar to the apprentice/master style used by sorcerers.  But, among druids, students must be hand selected by the village elders.  Those selected are not necessarily the ones with the most innate power, but those who would bear best their power.  Druids value highly honor and responsibility.  Though lacking in individual strength, they see themselves as stewards of nature and take that role with utmost seriousness.  This attitude makes their values somewhat unique.  If the actions of a druid result in injury or death to another, the druids would not see a crime in the result, but in the misuse of power and the failure to bear responsibility.  As a result of this relatively skewed world view, druids are often at odds with humans on moral issues.  It’s fortunate, then, that druids keep largely to themselves and have little interaction with the outside world.  Their exact numbers are unknown, but they are the rarest magic users to find in Tania.
