Often great historians, teachers and engineers, sages are the scientists of magic, using precise formulas to create magical effects. By combining specific ingredients, both mundane and exotic, and certain incantations, sages can harness the arcane energy of Ethelios and direct it to their will. All manner of spells can be used in this way, ranging from simple conjurations and hexes to the more powerful summoning and reanimations. It is simply a matter of knowing the right spell and having the required items on hand. This, in reality, is the only limit on a sage’s power: knowledge. While the most revered have dozens of spells committed to memory, they also have libraries full of spell books. They also have vast pantries where all types of various spell ingredients are stored.
Due to the nature of sagery, there is sometimes a discrepancy between how the effects of a spell are described and what actually happens. Often times the texts being used are of a different dialect, sometimes an extinct one. And even the best translations sometimes get it wrong. Again, the sage is limited by knowledge. Does he know exactly the spell he wants to attempt will do? And, in either case, is he willing to deal with the consequences? Even the simplest spells can have unintended consequences. Conjuring fire is a simple spell, but doing so in a barn full of hay is less than wise. Once the desired demon is conjured, can the sage keep it from running amok? These are the types of questions the sage must ask before picking up the mortar and pestle, before uttering the final magic words.
Also due to the nature of sagery, they are the most common, by far, of all the magic users of Tania. Anyone with the desire can learn the techniques uses by sages. There are great academies dedicated to the study of the arcane arts. Not only do these schools teach magic, but play a hand in regulating it as well. Because of the potential for danger, and the ease of use, sagery is very highly regulated. The teaching of any magic beyond parlor tricks is strictly prohibited outside of the established academies. Further, these academies require that students take strict oaths that govern their conduct both during and after training. Those that choose to abuse their knowledge and power are dealt with harshly.
